How far back do most companies go on criminal background checks?
I applied for a position at a hospital. I had a conviction in 2002. I had heard that it is 7 years. What do you think? Thank you in advance for your answers.

When a company requsts a criminal record for someone (called SBI/III, with the SBI being state record and III being federal), there is no cut off date. They get the entire criminal record. Criminal records do not go away after a period of time. The hospital may choose not to take into account anything more than 7 years old, but they would receive your entire history if a criminal record check was performed.

It is not a matter of how far they go back. If your criminal record is pulled up, your rap sheet will show anything that you have been convicted for. Most companies will still hire people who have been convicted of minor crimes providing they are not going to be in what might be called sensitive positions. A lot depends on what crime you committed.

I have spent the last year and a half researching and testing background check services for a consumer review site (http://www.CompleteReviews.net ) and in that time have run tons of background checks using many different companies. Based on my testing, there is no such time limit on criminal records. They stay forever as far as I can tell unless you get them expunged or sealed which is a possibility in some states. Here is an article that walks you through the process of getting records expunged/sealed… http://publicrecordsearch.wordpress.com/2009/04/24/how-to-get-a-criminal-record-expunged-or-sealed/
Otherwise, your conviction will show up on the background check. I am sorry to share this as I know it is a hard situation. I personally feel there should be a time limit on some types of crimes as people should be allowed a second chance to turn their lives around!
