How do companies go about getting criminal background checks? Is there a statewide database?

There are several Internet sites which will do a search for a fee, but why do the fees vary, are some better than others, if so how? Is there an easy, free, direct way to know what is on my record? Are searches sensitive to names or only SSN’s? I recieved an OWI this year but my name is is wrong on the court papers-I’m wondering if it will even show up. Thanks…

It’s simple, straightforward, you can do it all online – right now – in 3 easy steps…

First thing is, do not trust "national" databases. They are often inaccurate or do not contain complete information. The price varies because different sites are trying to make more money. There are only a few companies they offer "multi-jurisdictional" "national" so other background screening comapnies use other company’s databases. Like i said be careful doing instant searches as they are not always accurate.

There’s a huge variation in how companies do this. Some do fingerprint checking thru the FBI databases. Some companies just do a cursory check to make sure you’re not currently wanted by any jurisdiction.

Anyhow your best bet for finding a job is the smaller businesses that cannot afford to spend for an FBI search. The cheapest search is about $100 per person and is usually an SSN search. Name searches are too subject to variation and misspellings.

There is no free way, but I think the lowest cost is off the internet and using the old-fashioned yellow pages. Look up private investigators. Get one whose office is near a court house (it means they deal with criminals a lot). Call and find out what they charge — it can be as cheap as $35 for a few counties — more with more counties or nationwide.
